"Stop and Smell the Roses!"
Jackals usually den in holes dug by themselves or others. The mother spends 90% of her time in the den after whelping. Once the pups come outside at about 3 weeks of age, the mother spends increasing amounts of time away from the den. Pups begin to sleep outside of the den under bushes around 3 1/2 months and slowly learn the limits of the territory and how to hunt. It hunts on its own at 6 months. Most offspring leave the territory between 6 and 8 months of age. Others stay on as 'helpers'.
