| Like all Cercopithecines, Vervets have cheek pouches which open by the lower teeth and extend down the side of the neck. They can hold about a stomach's load of food. When competing or foraging away from the safety of trees, they are able to quickly fill the pouches then flee to a safer area to eat. To empty the pouches, the back of the hand is used to push food towards the opening. The food is then selectively processed by hand and mouth. | ||||||||||
