| The Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) is the world's fastest mammal reaching speeds of 60-70 miles per hour. I have to confess that this picture was actually taken at the San Diego Wild Animal Park, but I have my reasons for including it here. On our arrival in Tanzania as we were traveling from Nairobi to Arusha at dusk, a Cheetah appeared on our right, ran by the car for a short distance, as if we weren't even moving, then crossed in front, all in a matter of seconds. It stopped about 25 yards from the road and turned toward us. We had also stopped. We seemed to be transfixed on the cheetah, and he on us. Several minutes passed. We didn't even attempt to reach the camera, not wanting to disturb this special moment. We assumed that there would be another chance for a photo later. There wasn't. We never saw another one no matter how hard we looked. | ||||||||||
