"Out of the Past!"
The Hyrax is an ancient Family that shares many characteristics of the primitive ungulates, especially elephants and aardvarks. At one time they were the most numerous herbivore in all Africa. These Bush or Bruce's Yellow-spotted Hyraxes(Heterohyrox brucei) coexist with their larger cousin, Johnston's Hyrax, and they are often found together. These hyraxes have to sunbathe in the morning to warm their bodies like reptiles. They are so small that they have very little control over their body temperatures. They have many predators so they must always stay close to cover. They are the dominant herbivores of rocky habitats.
