"Profiles of Courage"
Peace at Dusk
The Rhino calf is independent of its mother at 2 1/2 -3 years old and sexually mature at 5-6 years. It lives 40-50 years in captivity. Adult bulls live alone and cows are often with a calf. Home ranges of 6-14 miles overlap with some contact between individuals. The range size depends on availability of food and water. When this is plentiful, the animal is quite sedentary and rests most of the day in the open, in full sun, even when shade is available.
