"Mud Bath!"
Dry Mud is a Soothing Lotion
Many ticks and insects adhere to the Black Rhino's skin. These provide food for the oxpecker who is often seen on their backs. The bird flees and vocally warns the rhino when something unusual approaches. The rhino will wallow in the mud frequently when the flies and insects are too much for the oxpeckers to handle. Mud will cake on the body and protect the skin from the biting insects. They then rub off the mud in which the insects are hopefully encased. Mud is also used to protect the body from the hot sun.
