"Pick up the Pace, Herman!"
Wildebeests have a 3 week calving period during which most of the calves are born. Survival is rare for the calves that are born earlier or later. The herd is more structured at this time, and the female wildebeest never separates from the group. Most calves are born within a 'calving area' before midday. The calves gain their feet and begin nursing within 3-6 minutes. If the mother moves away at this time, it will run beside her.
