"A Long Look Good-bye!"
Who Are Those Guys??
A mother with a new calf stays in the nursery herd. To avoid mix-ups in large groups, she must stay with her calf about two days for the imprinting process to succeed. Survival rates are higher in these large aggregations than in smaller herds. The feeble calves are less likely to be sighted by predators within the large herds. The danger increases for these calves when they start the migration, however, while it decreases for those calves in the smaller, sedentary herds.
