Let me tell you what I witnessed about thirty years ago at the New York Zoo. In those days zoos were mostly just cages and the orangutan was right next to the western lowland gorilla. The keeper had just given both of them bananas. The orangutan ate his right away, looked at the gorilla, who had not eaten his and was just sitting there. The orangutan picked up a twig that was laying around his cage and poked through the wire mesh at the gorilla. The gorilla poked back through the mesh with the banana. The orangutan took the banana and ate that one too. Is this tool use??
