The Military Macaw has green plumage with blue on the upper tail coverts, lower back and rump. It has a bare, sparsely feathered red area between the eye and the upper beak. It also has zygodactyl toes. This is where two toes face forward and two toes face backward. This gives the bird excellent grasping and climbing ability.
