Barracudas
(Sphyraenidae)

These are lean, fast and powerful predators with an elongated body, a pointed protruding lower jaw and a large, forked tail. This mouth is filled with sharp teeth. They often cut their prey in two first and then return to feed in a manner similar to sharks. Attacks on humans are rare, but can cause serious injury. These attack occur mostly in turbid waters or from provocation such as splashing about in water or wearing bright, sparkling jewelry.

Heller's Barracuda
(Sphyraena helleri)

This is a slender, silvery fish with wide blue stripes along the length of its body. They are nocturnal predators. You will usually find them in tight groups, resting up above the reef by day. They are wary of divers but also quite curious and will allow you to approach if you are patient.
