Jacks
(Family Carangidae)

These are the swift, strong-swimming predators often found in open water near drop offs or over reefs. This family includes jacks or trevallies, rainbow runners, leatherbacks and scads. They are especially prized by fishermen, because of their spectacular fighting ability. They all have a color pattern typical among pelagic fishes - silver on the sides and undersides and bluish or greenish on the back. This makes them difficult to see either from above or below.

Bluefin Trevally
(Caranx melampygus)

This fish is also commonly known as the Blue Ulua. It is a beautiful jack - silvery blue with scattered dark blue spots on its sides and scattered dark blue spots on its sides and lovely blue fins. It can quickly change its color to almost black. This is Hawaii's most common jack. It may be found in small groups or alone.
